SEVENTH TASK
FAKE NEWS AND CRITICAL LITERACY
The article "Fake news: improved critical literacy skills are key to telling fact from fiction", posted in "The Guardian", explain how as digital resources become more accessible, faker news come up with it. Children are the most exposed to those fake news due to the fact that they are the ones who most use digital media. So, they need to be taught critical literacy skills in order for them to face more properly those fake news, and not to give them all for granted. Now, How can we empower Colombian students to critically spot fake news?
First, the Colombian education system main drawback is not emphasizing what it should be. Students at the school are being taught a large variety of subjects but not emphasizing on one important thing: Reading comprehension. According to the article, by developing reading comprehensions, students would learn to deeply analyze ideas and to seek for factual information that supports that information. Colombian students need to spend more time not only reading, but sharing and comparing ideas which, with the time and practice will give them richer literacy skills.
Second, Colombian students are been given meaningless information in the classroom, so they will easily forget it. The article proposes working on meaningful activities so students learn by experience. Accordingly, learners would develop critical literacy by the assumption of knowledge.

Dear Professor,
EliminarAm glad you ask me that question:
Well, if I were the principle of an institution I would, first, incorporate a course in the schedule exclusively for Critical literacy. You know, reading and writing is not an strength that most of the students have when they get to graduate from secondary school and it represents a problem once they get at the University where most of the time they have to read and write essays, articles, reports, etc. besides that, the issue of fake news that I explained in the reflection above. I speak for myself when saying that it happens to me, and I don´t blame my teachers at secundary school but the system itself.
Secondly, I would replace Religious Education for Critical thinking course. I consider that before choosing any religion, ideology, or any choice of any kind, one should have developed enough the Critical thinking skills in order to freely and consciously choose what one thinks is better. Moreover, to understand other choices and respect them.
Thank you, professor, for taking the time to read and comment our reflections and task.
Regards,
Cesar E. Reyes
